Hi Guys,

Does anyone have any experience of hybridizing the GTB2260VKLR. This would be for a C350 CDI.

I have spoken to a few turbo specialists in the UK such as Turbo Dynamics, Xman and AET and they advise that the most they could do with this is a bigger compressor wheel.

Is there any scope to add a bigger turbine as well?
Thanks

Because why not? Its normal that basic chip is not enough after some time and you wanna make more power. Some basic 300hp is really not that much such a heavy cars. Not sure if there is bigger wheels available for vklr.

Why do you need it bigger? It's already plenty for a 1.9 or 2.0 unless you're going with a compound setup.

The car in question is running a 3.0L V6 (OM642) currently 310bhp with just software. I have a friend with an E90 BMW 335D stage 2 that i would like to keep up with to answer your question :D

Im really just looking for experiences anyone has on upgrading the GTB2260VKLR and how they found it and any expectations on what power increase a bigger comp wheel would give over the standard unit.

Thanks

I'm already considering going from 2566vk to GTD2872vkr :D On a 4 pot. The quest for stupid power never ends.

It may be worth you taking to Craig at TDI Turbo's in the UK, he is ex Turbo Dynamics.
I had a VW T5 2.5 GT2056V machined to take a Mercedes GTB2060 turbine and comp wheel.

Talk to Majesty here, i think he has a solution for the VKLR , should be enough for 380-400hp
Under 3000rpm will be dead of course, not much fun for a street car.

Change only the comp.wheel and you can push it to 350hp max also. Larger turbine would be ideal ofcourse. There is option to go gtb2056 as base from v6 320cdi and use amg turbine and some larger compressor. This would give you potential for 400hp. It would be pnp but slower to spool as its not bb turbo.

Thanks all :)

From reading up it would seem to keep the drive ability and to keep the potential for lag down then an upgrade to the comp wheel to something reasonable would be enough for what im looking for (along with supporting mods)

Its interesting to see the page from KC performance, looks like they have fitted a 70mm comp wheel to create to the GTB2270VKLR, i wonder how the lag would be with that size of wheel....i was only thinking of going GTB2265VKLR

From what I read you want to keep the compressor inducer the same size as the exducer turbine roughly, what goes in must come out, I don't no if the amg gt23 turbine fits the vklr as it's ball bearing but its 48.6mm exducer so a compressor wheel around 48mm inducer would be a nice match

Hi Guys,

Resurecting this thread just for a bit of information. I have managed to find a supplier who has bigger turbine wheels for the VKLR. Specs would be below for the turbo build.

GTB2567VKLR

Compressor - 49.5/65/67mm

Turbine - 49.1mm / 51.4mm (Supposed to also be lighter than standard wheel)

My car (C350 CDI 3.0L) drives well just now with minimal lag on the standard GTB2260VKLR, just wondering how much more lag the larger turbo is going to introduce?

thanks

If the tune is well done you wont feel much lag on a 3.0 engine with that turbine.
I went for the same setup for my 3.0 but different CW 50.2/65 7+7

Do you have a price and contact details ? I have found a supplier in Romania of similar turbine wheel but they just want to install it themselves ! Installation is not a problem, their price is ! I also have a gtb2056vk which is waiting for AMG turbine wheel and 65/69 6+6 blade billet compressor ! Lag is not an issue in my case but I also don’t have a 3.0 tdi engine to play with ! Thanks in advance !

Hi mate, i know the supplier in Romania your talking about, i have been in contact with them but as you said its pricey!

I have been in talks with another supplier who will be getting the GTB25VKLR turbines in stock within the coming month, i dont want to send my turbo off so have been quoted £1400 for complete turbo with specs above to effectively make it a GTB2567VKLR then i would sell my stock turbo privately. A little worried about the lag but these new turbine wheels are lighter than the stock GTB22 wheels and over 50 grams lighter than AMG wheels.

On this turbo the price includes a 'Gen 2' compressor wheel, when i inquired about what this was they said that the 6+6 and 11 blade designs were now older and the Gen 2 was the preferred choice. Anyone know more info on these Comp wheels?

Cheers

From what i know the price for complete vklr with the good stuff inside (light turbine+gen 2 wheel of your choice) is 1300 euro, at least this is what i know he asks. And you dont have to send turbo.
Tell him you're from the forum and maybe there is room for extra discount. Worth trying.

Nope ! AMG turbine is not Even pnp as it haș one oil Seal on the shaft-and not The double seal required by gtb turbos. You can get AMG style wheels made aftermarket that are supposedly lighter and with the right double oil seal however they don’t work on the vklr as this is ball bearings cartridge. AVG turbo does have an upgrade for the vklr with larger turbine wheel and larger billet compressor. They claim is good for up to 400 Bhp however I know wklr’s to be very problematic and shearing retaining bolts on chra thus wrecking the turbo !

Thank you very much..

so i see the vklr update is not simple ...

And if possible billet compressor wheel.. original turbina ..and plus somehow external wastegate.. ?

Vklr is bit limited on turbines to fit its stock 51/46 ore upgrade one 51/49 light weight.

To keep cost low use a 49/64 6+6 comp on stock turbine it go well.

I still have the smallest (gtb 2060 vklr) on the mercedes, so i want to change to bigger turbine...or 51/49 or 52/46 (TD04hl) it might still be okay ..

AVD turbos have a really big vklr hybrid in the works at the moment, I don’t know pricing but I am sure it’s not cheap, supposedly good for 450 Bhp...look them up on Facebook !

VKLR on the left for 2.0 project, and the big one for the 3.0 on the right
both with the light tw inside and 7+7 custom cw

Thanks, I thought so ! The larger vklr’s use BMW 530d exhaust housing it’s just a little bit bigger from factory and seems to flow a lot better than the VAG Vk housings !
