Hello,

Just bought a 2004 Polo 1.4 TDi .

This is a 3 cylinder engine (1422 cc) , 55Kw (75 HP) , I believe this is PD injection.

What type of turbo is stock on this engine? Is it a regular GT1544 or a VNT?
Full boost is at 2200 rpm , looks like a non-VNT to me.

What tuning options are there for this engine (besides a chip/box) ?
What's the max (reliable) power this engine can make?

I guess it would be pretty reliable if it's a PD130 just with one cylinder less :)

In that case, 140-150 hp without any internal mods should work.

It's more like a PD100 with 1 cilinder less.
The rpm's were the power is is very small.
With good chip it gets better.

With GT1749V or something you can make 120/130 hp with stonger clutch.
The it's a pretty fast car :)

Hi Johan, do you have some info about which clutch to go for? Do you know why they took such weak one? if they kept the PD100 there would be zero problems, but it seems even with moderate torque it slips in the higer gears when the turbo efficiency peaks :2200-2500rpm

Your car is equipped with WG Turbo, to swap in a VNT it needs a little more to do. To change to a VNT turbo you can use the device from Audi A2, 1.4l 90hp, and use basic mapping also from this car. Unfortunately the Audi Turbo is a kkk device so you cant do the easy compressor Upgrade with Garrett parts like with a Garrett turbo. I was searching for bigger compressor for the Audi Turbo but couldnt find until now. Anyway you should be able to see about 110hp with the conversion to the Audi device plus chiptuning.
You can also use PD Injectors from ASZ or ARL for further gain.

I'd just go for a gt1749v or kp39a and cut the 4th runner off the manidolf, other DP flange and it's done..

I know, thats the point.. use the base file you mentioned..

you can use 90hp WG turbo, which will also flow 20hp more, but spoolup is with the tiny WG oem turbo already at 2000 rpm.

This is log of remapped car.. notice the quite "slow" spoolup..

Somehow I'm too stuped to post the log well :/

The car was a VW Polo 75hp version, engine code: AMF

It suprised me that the oem file spiked already 2300mbar while requested was around 2090mbar..



NOTE: MAP and RPM are switched on the axic by axident..

A remap too.. as you see the modded log almost has no spiking I first tought there was something wrong with the actuator/N75, but when just spending 5 minuts with the N75 map it didn't spike 50mbar..

The oem file in that car was really one of the ugliest I've ever seen.. it spikes, car was slow.. All of the duration maps had antoher size ..

Will a dawes device/ manual boost controller help turbo spool up?

Anyone got any proof? i.e. Dyno Charts showing boost characteristics with and without boost controller?

not much, some spoolup can be gained with the smoke limiter, but not soo much, also, a tiny bit in the N75 map, but thats risky for spiking.. if you want soon spoolup, mount vnt turbo ;)

No Mojogoes, The AMF does come stock with the GT1544 wastegated turbo but I do have a couple of those in my shop right now that I am running my S/T Super 17 turbo that is producing 15 BAR-220PSI at 2200 RPM and another that is producing 3300 ft lbs of torque (at the crank) :D I could show you how I did this, it really is not that difficult.:D

Just a remap will do fine, the turbo will just not spool sooner, even if you disconnect the wastegate, the software keeps the N75 closed until about 1800rpm then by 2000rpm it's half open because otherwise it would spike.., you can only aid spool by giving more fuel in the smoke limiter.

Thats correct rub! Requested boost is already 2000mbar @ about 1700rpm, but n75 starts to work @ about 2100rpm with 35-37% duty cylce.There isnt enough exhaust gas to make more boost unless you give more fuel nearby to the smoke limiter....

I have tested the dawes device also, it allowas to rise boost, but doesnt make it spool faster....

I am pretty sure min must be near the limit with its current setup... its a smokey one! ;)

What is max safe boost on the 1.4 tdi turbo unit? I heave head that more boost after 1.35bar is useless and may damage the turbocharger.

Also on my petrol solenoid controlled turbo car the manual boost controller brought the turbo spool down by 800rpm!! Are you sure one of these dawes devices will not help on th tdi? :)

Also where can I take a boost feed for a boost gauge on this car? Anyone have an N75 diagram?

Feed for boost gauge you must take somewhere in IC piping.
Max. boost I wouldnt exceed 1.15-1.2bar, short spikes to 1.3 is ok.
The dawes device wont make it spool faster, the wastegate is closed until min. 2000rpm anyway, then the n75 beginns to open it up continously.

I mounted the dawes device on this engine last week, on first setup it made 1.5bar*g* but I reduced it to 1.2bar then. The BEGIN of boost build up wasnt reasonable changed with the valve.

Yes you´re right, you can take the readind with a "T" ! There is alrady a hose going form IC Pipe to the N75. ( I was to much into VNT which is vacuum controlled actuator*g*)

No, i havent seen the other posts, but i guess a second intercooler gives you quite a bit of more volume to fill up with the "little" turbo. Dont know if thats a soooo good idea.

engine de-coke?

I dont know anyone tryed NOS an the 3cyl. engine, sorry
