Yeah - same here - that is why I had to ask when I saw the straps going through the wheels.

I've got it down to a science now - run the car up the ramp and stop so I can get under the front with the axle straps in the control arms, then pull forward until the rear hangs out over the ramp to get around the axle beam, then pull forward to center the car on the trailer.

When I saw those photos, I second guessed myself for going through all that trouble.

This is the write up I've been waiting for. A week after taking delivery of my 09 TDI with the premium (no amp under driver seat) stereo with SAT (no nav) I installed my 10" sub. I used a line level converter from the rear speakers and while I was in there installed some bass blockers for the rear. I did the same bass blockers for the front speakers behind the deck when I installed my Dension ipod interface. The 12V remote wire for the amp I stole from the switched 12V supply at the 12V outlet plug in the trunk.

I feel the same way you describe: mid range off a bit, and the highs are WAY too bright. However, its decent for now.
So I ask you this. Power and remote is already in the trunk. How would you suggest I do my setup keeping the factory deck?
Run speaker wire from each door to the amp and then back to each door? Can you describe the wiring?
I would buy those UK speaker adapters. If I did that, what 6.5" setup would you buy in 3 way?
Great write up. Interested in pix as well.

My setup is very much like yours, so I can offer a bit of advice and experience. I left the head unit completely stock, and did not make any modifications except to cut the speaker wires where they entered the rubber door channel. You'll be able to spot the wires because they enter the cluster plug as a twisted pair.

Along the chassis rails, behind the plastic panels and under the back seat, I ended up with a high level signal pair to the amp next to a high level signal pair from the amp. I installed the LOCs in the trunk right before the amplifier inputs.

If I had the three weeks back, I would have ordered a 3-way set with a more shallow midrange speaker, even if it was more expensive. If you pull the existing door panel and take a measurement, you may find a nice 3-way set with similar measurements on woofersetc.com or sonicelectronix.com

You may find a 3-way set pre-made by Rainbow on some of the golf MKV forums, but I didn't see those for sale anywhere. I think the DLS C36 set sounds great, and it was one of the less expensive 3-way sets available online. Look at the Hertz ESK163L components, too, which are more expensive but may fit without any modification at all.

I didn't bother with the trunk wiring for remote turn-on, power or ground. I ran a 4ga power cable through the firewall from the battery, connected the ground to a mounting stud underneath the rear seat, and remote-turn on from an add-a-fuse circuit in the fuse box to the left of the drivers side dash.
